About Anina

Anina, also known by the pseudonym Anina.net, is an American-born international fashion model, blogger, and fashion technology and wearables event producer. She has a following in China. China Central Television awarded her ''China's top foreign model'' in 2009. She also has her own line of Anime-inspired clothes, ''aninaMINEme''. She is CEO and founder of 360Fashion Network, a network of fashion professionals using the web 2.0 and mobile technologies. Anina.net produces large fashion technology events in Asia such as the 360Fashion&Tech Expo (in its 4th year) together with the China National Garment Association CHIC show, which has over 125,000 people in attendance and the first high tech runway fashion show in China at the Mobile World Congress, Shanghai. She produced the IBM 360Fashion & Tech Innovation Awards in the United States in November 2015, though her first exhibition was in 2004, called ''a new kind of supermodel'' at Molière's house in Paris under the art posthume movement. Anina was the first model blogger, starting in 2004. Anina.net brings designers and technologists together to create one-of-a-kind designs for exhibition such as the Robotic Dress, laser dresses, LED bags and gloves, solar powered bags, 3D printed prosthetics, redesign of robots and mobile apps.

During this workshop, we invite participants to think, design and build open source hardware prototypes and products in consideration of their time cycles - its movement across geological, social and economic timelines. These timelines help us understand how technological artifacts transform over time in consideration of market fluctuations and trends, environmental concerns and constraints as well as sociopolitical shifts and policy changes.

The goal of the workshop is to explore the different timelines typical to different models of product development and hardware production. We add to conversations around agile and ''rapid prototyping'' and traditional corporate design timelines a more global and holistic consideration of time and making, drawing inspiration from China's shanzhai (山寨) culture.

With shanzhai as a critical element that enabled the growth of open source hardware, we will examine technology life cycles (production, use, discard, recycle) in the context of their impact of labor, environment, and social change. We consider where prototypes we have made and/or products we possess go, from its initial production, replication, distribution and use, asking questions like ''How can I make the first 100 units of my first prototypes?'' and ''What is this made of and where does it come from?''

Exploring Identity, Expression, and Corporeality through the creative process

Join us Monday to Tuesday, October 17-18, 2016 with special guest Leah Buechley, former MIT Media Lab professor and creator of Lilypad Arduino, for an hands-on interactive workshop on creating expressive wearables.

You may have seen the Porcupine Dress, heard of the world’s first “eyeborg”, or be a fan of Viktoria Modesta’s fusion of fashion, music, and prosthetics.

Ever wondered how to create something like that? Do you have your own story to tell through design and making?

In this workshop students of all levels - bachelors, masters, and PhD - will learn about and discuss critical making from a variety of perspectives, join a team of 2 -3 others to design and prototype their own wearable, and have an opportunity to hear Leah's personal journey. Workshop sessions include an overview of critical making, wearable technology tutorial, issues related to body politics, and a make-a-thon. The event culminates in a panel discussion with Leah and invited guests, followed by presentations of prototypes and discussion.
